opening sequence to kidulthood

This is the genre we are doing our opening of our film on, which british social realism. In this clip which is the opening of kidulthood the setting is established which is in a school as all the characters are wearing schol uniforms, we can also tell from the surroundings that it is in a school like the buildings and the classrooms. we can also establish the genre which is a gritty british social realism as it is set in England in London and how the characters act shows it could contain violance and gang war as some of them act aggressive towards a girl and some one hides something in a grit container which could be drugs. the characters are young as they are at school so we can relate to them, some of the characters are violant and often in gangs which relates to the genre as it is a gritty british gangster film. the audience is established straight away, which is the teenage audience as all the main characters are at school, we also know it will contain violance and will be a bit of an action as there is fighting from the begining. Enigmas are also set up at the begging which will keep the audience hooked, like what was put in the grit container. the conventions of the genre are also shown like violance, action and realism which will reassure the audience.

opening sequence to 'SHANK' analysis.

The Opening of this film starts with a small screen filled with shots of news footage in black and white. All of violent scenes. each scene cuts from one to the next very quickly and abruptly also the image often 'snaps' and 'fuzzes' showing it is broken and messed up. It then lists all the Actors who play the main characters with black and white images of the characters. Most them are holding items like baseball bats and hammers showing a lot of violence. All of the images are also accompanied by sound effects like gun shots and glass smashing. It then mentions people like the editor and title design and director and these names are shown with images like barbed wire and trashed cars, and images that are associated with gangs and riots and urban areas. Then there is a fast paced chase sequence with drum and bass music in the background. which is a popular with young people who might watch this type of film. The filming is a tracking shot and it isn't smooth flowing it's quite shaky which means it could have been done with a handheld camera. There is a close up of the feet running. There is a shot from behind the motorbike using depth of field the motor bike isn't in focus but the man is running. The sound of the motor bike is also very loud and aggressive over the music. The mise en scene is also very depressing and run down.

The feed back of the questionnaire was that the social realism film what our group has chosen to produce  is most popular in the 16-24 age group of which seven out of the ten asked said the enjoyed social realism films and enjoyed watching films such as Adulthood and shank opposing to the 30+ group of which only 2 of the ten asked enjoyed this kind of genre. Judging by the feedback what we are going to need to build up through our opening sequence is action and slightly touching over the characters in an attempt to make the audience want to watch the rest of the film. The survey has also told us that the location does not have to be built up it should just look like its a rural area were youths often go and possibly were there is graffiti on the walls and broken windows to make it more believable as the stereotypical setting for these kind of films are council estates and it would be unbelievable that crimes such as; drug dealing and gang wars would take place in a upper class area.

Successful opening sequences.

The opening titles for films should include information such as the institution that made the film, the director and the script writer. If there are any really famous actors or actresses there names are often included or the names or the actors that play the main characters.

The institution that would make our film.

1. We are making a very gritty british film like Kidulthood, Adulthood or Shank. It will be about gangs and young people. These films were sponsored by many company's and produced by more than one institution. Including 'Stealth Films' 'Film4'  and 'TMC Films' I think that similar companies would be involved in a film like ours.

conventions of an opening sequence

The conventions of an opening sequence are establishing the location which can be done by using text or a high angled extreme long shot of the location, or by not revealing the location at all. Also establishing the main characters. Audio and the music which can reveal the genre and can be used to put us in a certain mood. Also the type of camera shots used and the type of editing wether they use close ups or use fast paced editing.

inital ideas

we have come up with some ideas for our opening sequence such as; a gangster film, we will have to do this by including some of the main conventions such as money, drugs and possibly some violence. The mise en scene we will have to use if we decide to use a gangster film is dark back grounds with useage of side lighting. We are also concidering using a cowboy and indian based opening sequence of which we will have to use the main conventions of guns and attempt to create the image it is set in texas.
